 Two people were recently rescued from an attack by orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar. Commonly known as killer whales, orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family. Adult male killer whales are significantly larger than females, reaching up to 9.5 meters in length and weighing up to 8 tons, while females are about 7 to 8.5 meters long and weigh around 4 tons or more. Newborn calves measure between 2 to 2.4 meters in length.  Interestingly, orcas, along with pilot whales and sperm whales, are among the few mammal species besides humans where females experience an extended post-reproductive period, known as menopause.
